Mayor's Coronavirus Update

Posted by Rick Hobart, Mayor on Mar 30, 2020

I want to take this opportunity to give you an update on the COVID-19 situation. The President and his task force have extended the social distancing guidelines to April 30, 2020. They are working non-stop in those hot spot areas to reduce the spread of this invisible and threatening virus. They are producing and distributing as much PPE as possible including test kits that can give results within fifteen minutes.

I also want to give encouragement to those who may be having a difficult time staying at home, especially for some who are not at all used to this new norm. Hang in there. Statistics are showing that the “Stay at home” order is working and will greatly help to reduce the spread of the virus and help save lives.

The people of Vernonia are doing great. Neighbors are helping neighbors. Volunteers are making homemade masks for healthcare workers, groceries are being delivered to those who are unable to drive to town, school lunches are being dispersed on a daily average of 170 lunches and many are supporting local essential businesses with common sense and civility.

In closing, I want to thank our city staff, police, and our local businesses that have gone above and beyond to keep our community moving forward, but most of all, I wish to thank the citizens for doing their part in keeping Vernonia safe and healthy during this crisis.

Respectfully, Mayor Hobart
